The North Dakota State University School of Nursing is recognizing an outstanding teacher for inspiring her students with the Mary J. Berg Award for Excellence in teaching.

Sara Berger, the assistant professor of nursing practice at NDSU Nursing, is the first educator in Bismarck to receive the Award for Excellence in Teaching.

Berger has been teaching nursing students for 15 years and this month, her hard work paid off.

The award recognizes educators for engaging students, demonstrating knowledge, and using innovative approaches to teaching. Berger says her students wrote touching letters, recommending her for the award.

"After reading those letters that it didn't even matter if I won the award.. knowing the impact that you make in the life of a student was really the best gift of all," Berger says.

Berger says she hopes to be a role model for students and help them become the best nurses they can be.
