Bismarck has been working for years to protect residents from flooding, and the city is part of a program that rewards citizens for this work.

In October of 2017, Bismarck joined the National Flood Insurance Program Community Rating System. The current rating, eight, entitles residents up to 10 percent off flood insurance premiums, and the higher rated the city becomes, the better discount it gets.

"Public works does a good job, they do a lot of maintenance on the drainage system, but once we can document that better, and they have a database and systems going in place, once that can be documented better we'll increase our score that way. So that might be one of the easiest ways to go from class eight to class seven," said Gary Stockert, Bismarck emergency manager.

The program also benefits those living in the Extra-territorial Area around Bismarck. Stockert encourages residents to make sure they're getting that discount.
