The former Bismarck chief of police has been appointed State Radio director.

Dan Donlin retired as chief nearly a year ago and has been working at the North Dakota Department of Transportation as a safety liaison.

Donlin served three decades with BPD and five years as chief. He also served 15 years on the SWAT team.

“He ultimately knows the importance of providing steady, compassionate leadership to those who respond at a moment’s notice when help is needed,” said Maj. Gen. Al Dohrmann.

Donlin say he’s excited for the opportunity.

“The reputation of State Radio is very high and I’m glad to be a part of it,” said Donlin.

He says he’s looking forward to work on the side of dispatchers since they play an important role in emergency response.

“You never get to see them but their back and forth information is critical for responders.” Said Donlin.

Donlin is taking the place of current State Radio Director Mike Lynk. Lynk announced his retirement earlier this year. While director, Lynk developed a set of channels called Bank 5, which are used in every public safety radio in North Dakota for mutual aid situations.

Donlin’s first official day is July 8 but will begin shadowing Lynk next week.
