The North Dakota National Guard held a change of responsibility ceremony for the State Command Sergeant Major.

Now-retired Command Sergeant Major David Lien joined the guard in 1986 as a combat engineer. The new State Command Sergeant Major Derek Heck, says the Guard is like family.

"The people are what make the organization. You create some of the best friendships that you will ever encounter. You go through deployments, you go through some of the worst conditions with the best people," said State Command Sergeant Major, Derek J. Heck.

Heck will work with the Army commander in charge of 3,000 soldiers in North Dakota's Army National Guard.
