GRESHAM, Ore. — Some Gresham firefighters went above and beyond this week after a man passed out while mowing his lawn.
After taking care of the man and getting him into a hospital-bound ambulance, firefighters on Engine 72 stayed and finished the job.
“I looked at the lawn and said you know, that just seems like the right thing to do,” said firefighter, Erik Olson, who mowed the lawn. “The trimming around the concrete probably wasn't perfect but I got the majority cut for him!”
While riding away with her husband in the ambulance, Weeks’ wife Joanne noticed the good deed in progress.
“I looked outside and there was a young firefighter mowing the lawn—I just couldn't believe it!” said Weeks. “I thought it was just unbelievable that they'd do that, it was really kind.”
Firefighters on Thursday tweeted video of the remarkable gesture.
Weeks was released from the hospital after getting treated for dehydration.
“I want to thank the fire department who came out and helped me,” said Weeks. “It was a traumatic experience for me and my wife, and we're going to take care of them.”
Olson said he’s glad his kind gesture is attracting positive attention to the Gresham Fire Department.
“Honestly what I did is just an overall snapshot of what our people are doing every day on scene,” said Olson. “The small stuff matters.”
