Fire burns 12 acres near Silverton

The fire was 90 percent contained by late Saturday night. No one had to leave their homes.

SILVERTON, Ore. — A 12-acre brush fire threatened homes in Silverton on Saturday night, Marion County Sheriff’s Office said.

At one point, 8 homes were under a "ready" status for evacuation. No one ended up having to leave their homes.

Fire crews left the scene around 11 PM and left the fire in the control of the property owner in the area of Spring Villa and Grade Road SE.

The fire started on an 80 acre parcel of land near Drakes Crossing.

Fred Patterson of the Drakes Crossing Rural Fire Department said a land owner had cut trees on his property this past spring. 70 piles of debris were left behind.

The property owner had a permit to burn the debris. He ignited 24 of the piles. He apparently misunderstood the permit and started burning at 6 PM instead of finishing at 6 PM.

Shortly before 7:30 PM, emergency crews responded to the report of a brush fire in rural Marion County.

Deputies assisted fire officials with notifying residents nearby to be prepared for possible evacuations, the sheriff's office said.

Fire crews from Silverton Fire District, Drakes Crossing Fire District and Oregon Department of Forestry responded to fight the fire.
