The Cheyenne Police Department hosted a free self defense workshop from 5:30 a.m. until 6:30 a.m. led by Officer Markum King.

By learning some basic self defense, people can feel more empowered and safer. But, one simple step everyone can take is even easier than learning some moves... Putting down that cell phone!

“While situational awareness is huge, being aware of your surroundings, being aware of who is watching, not only for the people you love but for the community itself,” said Officer King.

The workshop was full with children, teenagers, and adults of all ages. Many walked away feeling more confident going about their daily activities.

“Sometimes I feel as a small female, very intimidated walking around downtown or in busy areas so it does make me feel more comfortable knowing what to do in those situations,” said Jessica Middelstadt.

If you do find yourself in a dangerous situation, the three main areas to hit on your attacker to free yourself are the eyes, nose, and groin.

“My number one is the eyes, you get a thumb or you get a finger in their eyes and you do what you need to do [to make that person] let you go,” said Officer King. “Cheyenne is a great place to live and the way we protect our city is we look after one another.”
