A proposal before the Honolulu City Council aims to increase the rates for metered parking at Honolulu Zoo.

The bill proposes that meters in the zoo parking lot charge $1.50 per hour for four hours. The rate is currently $1.00 per hour for four hours.

KHON2 got mixed reactions to the proposal.

“The cost of living is already really high over here, and I feel like a dollar an hour is fair for how much people spend in Waikiki no matter what anyways,” said zoo visitor Megan Medlicott.

“Definitely going to prevent people from coming down if they start raising the parking prices,” said Aiea resident Jason Tangalin. “The zoo and everything else, you gotta pay to get in and I’m sure for some people it’s kind of high.”

The bill would also add metered parking at Kamamalu Neighborhood Park and Aala Park, at a rate of $1.50 per hour for three hours. The new rates are being put in place where, according to a city spokesman, drivers have been parking their vehicles for uses unrelated to the parks.

It was introduced last week by Councilman Ernie Martin on behalf of Honolulu Mayor Kirk Caldwell’s administration.
