Momentum is building for another Hawaii saint.

First there was St. Damien, then St. Marianne, both canonized for their service of those banished to Kalaupapa, the remote peninsula on Molokai, because of Hansen’s Disease in the 1800’s.

Honolulu’s Catholic Bishop has asked the Vatican to open a sainthood cause for Joseph Dutton, according to a Vermont diocese where Dutton is from.

He was called Brother Dutton but never belonged to a religious order.

He converted to catholicism after the Civil War and served as a layman missionary on Molokai for nearly five decades.
