The girl, from Manchester, was kayaking with her parents along the Duck River below Normandy Dam, The Tennessean reported.

The family was near an old low head dam called Courtner’s Mill and attempted to kayak through an area where the river cut a channel around the dam, WZTV reported.

The girl, whose name has not been released, fell into the water when her kayak capsized and was swept away by the current, the television station reported. The teen, who was wearing a life jacket, was pinned under a downed tree and drowned, according to the TWRA.

The girl’s parents attempted to free her but were prevented by the current of the river, WZTV reported.

The Bedford County Tech Team, Bedford County Emergency Medical Services, Bedford County Fire, Normandy Fire, Bedford County Sheriff’s Department and TWRA responded to the scene, but the girl had drowned by the time they arrived, The Manchester Times reported.
