3-year-old in Texas finds gun, accidentally shoots self in head

A little boy is in unknown condition after police say he accidentally shot himself in the head.

Law enforcement believe the 3-year-old woke up Friday evening, got out of bed, and found the gun on top of a dresser in another room. The father heard the gun go off and rushed to his son.

"He immediately found the child and grabbed the child,” Fort Bend County Sheriff Troy Nehls to CNN affiliate KTRK. “Was panicking of course, and trying to find his cell phone and then actually ran outside with the child and then got some help from a passerby who ended up calling 911.”

"He said that the little boy appeared like he was still breathing. He was crying. He seemed to be conscious, wasn’t really talking. And the man was just of course frantic. He was scared he didn’t know what to do," Rebecca Calle, one of the passerbys, told KTRK.

The boy was airlifted to an area hospital. There has been no update to his condition Saturday morning.

The incident happened in Katy, a suburb of Houston.
