11 News is always reminding the public, never give out your personal information over the phone. On Tuesday, multiple viewers reached out about receiving a call from the same number with a person threatening jail time.

The person on the other end of the line claimed to be Sgt. David Martin with the Social Security Department. Every viewer said they received a call from 714-252-4663, a number that is disconnected. The caller claimed the person's social security number was suspended and that they could face jail time if they didn't act immediately.

The scam is incredibly common, but it can easily catch people who depend on Social Security benefits off guard.

The Social Security Administration recommends the public does the following if they are concerned about their Social Security benefits or status:

"If someone saying they are from Social Security does email you requesting information, don’t respond to the message. Instead, contact your local Social Security office or call us at 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) to see whether we really need any information from you. "

To report suspicious activity you can call 1-800-269-0271.

The FTC says people filed more than 76,000 reports about Social Security scam calls over the last year and lost more than $19 million. That’s more money than what victims lost to the IRS scam when it was at its peak, which was $17 million.
