The Colorado Springs Police Department was able to arrest a wanted man early Wednesday morning with help from K-9 Officer Ozzie.

The police department said officers got a call around 11 p.m. Tuesday that a wanted person was at an apartment in the 800 block of Tenderfoot Hills Road. Police identified the suspect as 26-year-old Jamie Leonardo Cardona and said he was wanted for escape and had multiple felony warrants.

According to police, officers went to the apartment and tried to talk to the people inside, but they were not cooperating.

During that time, the police department said officers saw Cardona step onto the front balcony of the second floor apartment and jump to the ground. Police said Cardona tried to run away, but K-9 Ozzie stopped him. After Ozzie caught Cardona, officers said he punched the canine officer, but the dog was not hurt.

In addition to his outstanding warrants, the police department said Cardona is also facing charges for obstructing a peace officer, resisting arrest and animal abuse.

Officers said a 43-year-old woman named Elizabeth Hopkins was also arrested and is facing charges of obstructing a peace officer for interfering during Cardona’s arrest.
