“Road trip! Road trip!” This week, road trip with Viz City, KLCC’s Arts Review Program to a beautiful August day at the coast, where we are visiting with artist Victoria Tierney at the North Bend Public Library. Victoria has a new show called “The Spirit of ‘76” to celebrate her 76th year.
"It occurred to me when I turned 76 that that was the spirit of revolution.. <<1:50>> So a lot of my work this year, this whole year, of different kinds, but it’s all been informed by that feeling, like, ‘What is this revolution? What is the transition? What are we going through? What are we changing to?’"
Victoria is a fine watercolorist. You will see color and light illuminating the gallery. However, when asked to point out a signature piece that expresses her theme of “The Spirit of ‘76,” she pointed to a large, colorful almost abstract painting called “Party Politics.”
"I started with a full-sheet, watercolor painting. And I was thinking of the rift in this country and how we’re in such a divided state. And I was drawing the two banks of a river, so the left bank and the right bank, you know. And I had this plan that I was going to be the one that was going to make the bridge, that was going to bridge the gap between our left wing and our right wing.
"But, unfortunately, the more I painted, the rift just got bigger and bigger, and it just got deeper and darker, and it like, ‘ohhh.’ And so finally what I did is I just painted a frame, kinduv, around the whole thing, and I thought, 'You know, you have to look at the whole picture.'"
