MARION COUNTY, TEXAS (KLTV) - One person died and another was injured Friday in a fatal crash.

About 1:40 p.m. Friday, Texas Department of Public Safety troopers responded to a fatal crash on Highway 43, just south of Lewis Chapel Road, about 12 miles northeast of Jefferson, Texas.

According to a preliminary DPS crash report, the driver of a Ford F-150 was traveling north on Highway 43 when the driver struck the back of a 2005 Chevrolet Malibu, driven by Clarence Whitaker, 61, of Jefferson.

The impact caused Whitaker’s vehicle to go into a side skid and travel off the roadway before it rolled several times. Whitaker was transported to a hospital in serious condition.

The driver of the Ford traveled off the road to the right, where it struck a tree and caught on fire, according to the report.

The driver was pronounced dead at the scene by a justice of the peace and transported to Haggard Funeral Home in Jefferson.

DPS says troopers are still working to identify the driver and notify next of kin.

The crash remains under investigation.
