Kansas City leaders voted Thursday to send municipal inmates to three other facilities.
The move comes as the city's contract with the Jackson County jail expires in less than two weeks and amid problems with overcrowding and security at the county jail.
The City Council approved spending $350,000 Thursday to begin a contract with Vernon County and use 20 of its beds, as well as a facility downtown and another in Johnson County, Missouri.
There's no long-term plan yet when the contract runs out.
City Councilwoman Alissia Canady said the contracts are the best solution available for now.
"We are taking public safety seriously, and so for us to be in this catch 22, where we're in limbo at this point, it's a situation that was exacerbated by issues at the jail and the change of leadership at the county," Canady said.
Vernon County is about an hour and a half away, and city officials said police will handle transportation.
