CHIEF METEOROLOGIST ERIC BRILL – EVENING UPDATE

Friday, August 14, 2020

Throughout basically all of Southern Idaho, there is going to be a heat advisory, and/or an excessive heat watch or warning in place throughout the weekend and early next week. Temperatures are expected to be 5-15° above average all throughout the weekend and next week. Specifically for Sunday, Monday and Tuesday, seasonably hot temperatures are expected. If you need to do some outdoor activities/chores, try to do them before 2 PM or after 8 PM. Between 2 and 8 is the heat of the day, and could become dangerous rather easily. Make sure to drink plenty of water, wear light colored clothing, take it slow, and keep an eye on the elderly, kids and pets! High pressure is about to take over in Southern Idaho, and that means a lot of the region is going to see temps in the 90s for the next week, and potentially longer than that.

This area of high pressure is going to park itself somewhere along/near the Utah/Nevada border, and start to crank temperatures up quite a bit. Up to this point of the Summer, we really have been fortunate to not see a true string of days in a row of REALLY hot weather conditions, but that is going to change. From Saturday, August 15th through Friday, August 21st, temperatures for highs are very likely going to be in the 90s throughout the Magic Valley and Mini-Cassia Region. I expect the Wood River Valley to be there from Sunday through Friday. Many of those days within the Magic Valley and Mini-Cassia Region will likely be in the middle to upper 90s, which is about 10° above average.

Nothing is really going to move this area of high pressure out of or away from the region, so the mentality of the high pressure is basically ‘welp, no one is trying to kick me out, so why should I bother moving or leaving?!?”. It really wouldn’t be a surprise to see these well above average temperatures continue into next weekend as well, and then maybe we will get some relief beyond that.

Some monsoonal moisture will try to filter itself into Southern Idaho during these hot days, but only slight chances of showers and storms are going to be possible. The vast majority of the region is going to stay dry over the next week.

Over the past few days, breezy weather has developed during the afternoon and evening hours, but I anticipate that to not be quite as evident over the next few days. Pretty typical 5-15 mph winds are expected more often than not.

Get ready for the hottest forecast we have had all Summer, folks! The next 7-10 days will likely end up being the hottest stretch that Southern Idaho has seen in a bit!
