Twitter reacts to reports of Butch Jones hiring at Maryland

Most Tennessee fans reacted in one of two ways to reports that Butch Jones will join Mike Locksley's staff at Maryland: They either had a laugh at Jones' expense, or they celebrated the fact that UT's buyout to its former coach will be further mitigated.

InsideMDSports.com, citing sources, reported on Monday night that Jones is expected to be an associate coach and tight ends coach at Maryland.

Jones would reunite with Locksley, the former Alabama offensive coordinator who was hired as Maryland's coach last week. Jones spent the 2018 season as an offensive analyst for Alabama after Tennessee fired him in November 2017 amid his fifth season as coach.

Maryland has not confirmed the Jones hiring.

Jones getting an on-field assistant job at Maryland would help mitigate the buyout he's owed. His $35,000 salary at Alabama is a drop in the bucket.

Tennessee owed Jones an $8.26 million buyout when it fired him. The buyout is due in monthly installments throughout the duration of his contract, which was set to expire on Feb. 28, 2021. His Tennessee contract required him to try to find a new job to mitigate the buyout.

Here's a sampling of the reactions on Twitter at the Jones news.
