CHRISTINE, ACTION COULD BE TAKEN THIS AFTERNOON. CHRISTINE: ACCORDING TO THE AGENDA, DISCUSSION AND POSSIBLE ACTION ON AN IMPORTANT ITEM. THIS IS OVER A PLAN THAT COULD LIMIT WHERE PEOPLE CAN DEMONSTRATE ON COUNTY PROPERTY AND HOW LOUD THEY CAN BE. THAT RESOLUTION WOULD SAY FREE SPEECH ACTIVITIES LIKE PROTESTS COULD ONLY HAPPEN ON CERTAIN OUTDOOR PARTS OF COUNTY PROPER AND COULD NOT USE AMPLIFIED SOUND LIKE BULLHORNS OR SPEAKERS DURING BUSINESS HOURS. THIS IS AFTER SEVERAL DEMONSTRATIONS OUTSIDE THE OKLAHOMA COUNTY COURTHOUSE A LETTER SENT TO THE COUNTY COMMISSIONERS CO-SIGNED BY SEVERAL GROUPS INCLUDING ACLU OKLAHOMA AND THE NAACP OKLAHOM CITY BRANCH, URGING COMMISSIONERS TO ’STRONGLY OPPOSE’ THIS RESOLUTION. SAYING QUOTE ’THE ABILITY TO PROTEST AND DEMONSTRATE IS A FUNDAMENTAL RIGHT.’ WE KNOW COMMISSIONER KEVIN CALVEY SUPPORTS THE RESOLUTION. Oklahoma County commissioners will meet Friday to continue to talk about regulating the use of county property for free speech.According to the agenda, discussion and possible action could be made on an important item over a plan that could limit where people can demonstrate on county property and how loud they can be.That resolution would say free speech activities like protests could only happen on certain outdoor parts of county property and could not use amplified sound like bullhorns or speakers during business hours.This is after several demonstrations outside the Oklahoma County Courthouse.A letter sent to the county commissioners co-signed by several groups, including ACLU of Oklahoma and the NAACP Oklahoma City branch, are urging commissioners to strongly oppose the resolution, saying, “The ability to protest and demonstrate is a fundamental right.”Commissioner Kevin Calvey had said he supports the resolution and Commissioner Carrie Blumert opposes it.The Board of County Commissioners special meeting will begin at 11:30 a.m. KOCO 5 will keep you updated.
