The Water…Do Your Part outreach campaign identifies simple things we can do to keep our rivers and streams healthy. Check out the local resources and Do Your Part!
Tip of the Month – Pressure Washing
Most people don’t realize that pressure washing can cause harm to our local streams and rivers. Fish are much more sensitive than humans to chemicals and fine sediment.
Here are some tips to help prevent pollution from being carried away:
- Use an absorbent like baking soda or kitty litter for oil spills, sweep and place in the trash.
- Sweep the area before you begin. Fine dirt washing into storm drains clouds the water and is harmful to fish.
- Use rolled towels across your driveway to divert the water and give your landscaping a drink.
- Place rolled towels around a nearby drain to capture debris and filter the water.
- If you have to use chemicals with your pressure washer, use a shop vac and a helper to vacuum pooled water and dispose in your sink or bathtub. Indoor drains go to a wastewater plant to help clean the water before it gets released to a river.
