PORTLAND, Ore. (KOIN) — A person suffered from life-threatening injuries after a shooting in Southeast Portland Tuesday afternoon.

Police said the victim was found in the 1200 block of Southeast Yamhill Street just after 3 p.m. and taken to the hospital.

As of Wednesday morning, he was out of surgery and expected to survive.

Police said the investigation suggests the gun was fired accidentally while being cleaned.

Neighbors told KOIN 6 News this is usually a quiet area.

“It’s always been nice and pleasant. The few neighbors that I have met have been nothing but nice,” neighbor Tyler Walicek said. “Didn’t sense any weird vibes until today, of course.”

Portland police said a man involved stayed at the scene and is cooperating with officers. No one has been arrested.

“The people in the unit seemed rather nice, maybe a little out there,” neighbor Johnny said. “There were a couple altercations that they had living there over a couple of months. I don’t think I was horribly surprised but I was still surprised to this to happen in this neighborhood.”

A gun was recovered from the scene and police said there is no danger to the public.
