A campaign to protect our communities kicks-off tonight at Mills Park. The city of Carson is hosting National Night Out.

The campaign focuses on the relationship between the community and law enforcement. It provides a great opportunity to bring police and neighbors together under positive circumstances.

In light of recent mass shooting events Sheriff Ken Furlong emphasizes his deputies are prepared to protect our communities.

He said, “Allowing law enforcement or some of our service organizations to intervene before that crisis hits that critical level, is the best opportunity for us that’s what we hope to achieve with those relationships that we gain at these events such as National Night Out.”

Sheriff Furlong said whether you’re a kid or an adult it’s about making face to face connections with the men and women in uniform. He hopes this campaign can teach others to trust law enforcement.

He said, “As we saw this weekend, it can happen any day or any evening, just in any environment.”

Sheriff Furlong continued, “We apply resources here in Carson City as well as up in Reno to those challenges hoping we can stay ahead of the curve for folks who are suffering through crisis.”

There will be local agencies, hospital representatives, and mental health providers at the event. Sheriff Furlong said it’s a one-stop shop to see all the resources that are available within the community.

The event starts at 5 p.m.
