State of Nevada to start collecting your odometer reading

The Nevada Department of Motor Vehicles will begin collecting odometer readings Oct. 1 for most vehicles registered in Nevada.

For people who get smog tests in Washoe and Clark counties, the odometer readings will be collected then automatically.

But people who live in other counties that don’t require smog tests, or people who drive vehicles that don’t require smog tests, including electric vehicles, will have to submit the readings when they register. Motorcycles, mopeds and farm vehicles are exempt. There is no fee for this.

The Nevada Legislature required the information as part of a pilot program to help it make decisions on spending on highways. The DMV will use the information to compile reports for the legislature on miles driven. The program runs through Dec. 31, 2026.

The DMV is still developing the way it will collect the data. There will be a public workshop on the issue Sept 3 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Nevada Legislative Building in Carson City at 401 S. Carson St.

The plan calls for odometer data to be collected electronically when a vehicle has a smog test. People with vehicles that don’t get smog tests will submit the odometer readings when they renew their registrations. If people don’t provide the odometer readings when they renew online or at a DMV kiosk, it will not be accepted and they will have to renew their registrations at the DMV.

“We’re making the process as efficient as possible,” DMV Director Julie Butler said in a statement. “Just remember to write down your mileage before you get started. The DMV’s online services and kiosks will accept readings and we encourage everyone to continue using them.”
