The State Senate passed a bill yesterday extending the time first-time drivers have their learner's permit - from 6 months to a full year.

The bill also restricts the number of passengers who can be in the car with someone who has a learner's permit.

AAA officials think these new laws will help curb the high number of accidents, as motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for South Dakota teens.

Rhonda Keller the AAA district manager said, "This is a big win for us, having it be 12 months so they can drive in all seasons. It's pretty scary having a young driver driving on the ice, they have never experienced it, they got their license in the summer and so now they're driving to school in the winter."
