It’s a 50-year-old tradition that teachers, high school and elementary students look forward to every year. It’s the day when young kids visit Albuquerque High and leave with loads of presents.
“My favorite part is just seeing the reaction on the kids faces,” said Loretta Vasquez, a teacher at Albuquerque High School.
Vasquez has been participating in the program for her entire career, all of her 27 years at AHS.
“[I] never [get sick of it.] I love it,” said Vasquez.
This year, 65 kids from five elementary schools were part of the program.
Individual classes at AHS adopted all of them and helped check almost everything off their wishlists.
“It’s amazing to watch the high school kids’ reaction to all of this, as well as the kids we’re honoring,” said Vasquez.
Most classrooms had about two hours with their adopted kid. They spent the time eating, watching Christmas movies and opening presents.
