ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – It all started right as the afternoon commute was getting underway. Drivers were left stunned as a man did donuts in the middle of an intersection. The situation then escalated with Albuquerque police opening fire on the man in the middle of traffic.

It all came to an end near Lomas and San Mateo. The man who caused this bizarre series of events was taken to the hospital with a gunshot wound.

“He was doing donuts in the middle of the intersection,” witness Rebekah Huetter said. At San Mateo and Central, drivers were quick to pull out their cell phones and hit record. “The light changed again and again and traffic stayed still while he was doing this,” Huetter said.

“It was a very busy time of day and there was a lot of individuals in this area,” Albuquerque Police Deputy Chief Harold Medina said.

APD said they were dispatched a block over at Lomas and San Mateo where the driver was doing the same thing: “Just an individual driving erratically, waving a firearm outside the window of his vehicle,” Deputy Chief Medina said.

Witnesses said they couldn’t believe what they were seeing. “We swerved to miss him,” witness Jacob Brundige said. “He drove up on a car that was right next to us.”

Brundige had his 5-year-old son with him. He said the driver of the Subaru hopped a curb before coming to a stop, got out and climbed on top of the car, “with a gun in his hand, yelling and screaming and throwing his hands up in the air.”

“As this individual was contacted by officers…an altercation occurred between the officer and this individual and at least one shot was fired,” Deputy Chief Medina said.

Witnesses said the man refused to drop the gun after being asked repeatedly by officers. “We were getting a little nervous because he kept swinging his gun around,” Brundige said.

Cell phone video captured the moments after the man appears to be shot, and an officer running back to an unmarked car. “It was important that we were able to get officers here quickly before this could escalate and civilians get injured,” Deputy Chief Medina said.

Police said they are checking nearby businesses for surveillance video. They’re also asking for any witnesses who left the scene before giving a statement to police to call 242-COPS.

Police have not said if that man ever fired his gun. APD said he is currently stable.
