Hundreds take to the streets for second night of protests

ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – Black Lives Matter protestors took to the Albuquerque streets again Monday night to protest the killing of Minneapolis man George Floyd. The rain did not stop protestors Monday night and parts of Central near Nob Hill were blocked off so they could march in the streets.

Hundreds of people showed up around the University of New Mexico area, protesting police brutality against African Americans after a Minneapolis man George Floyd died one week ago in police custody.

“I think it’s always important to support what needs to be supported you know, it’s been too long that this is just continuously happening and people are tired of it. And I think that this is just another way to show support, this is another way to get out here as a community and just to be together and know that we don’t stand for this, like this is not okay, this was not going to be okay. It never was okay. and we got to make a stand and we got to stop it now,” said one protester.

Protestors Monday night demanded change within law enforcement, especially in confrontations with people of color. One protestor KRQE News 13 talked to says its important for people of all races to come together at this time and show support.

“I think especially as white activists we all need to stand up for our black brothers and sisters. I think that you know they have stood up for us for so many things and this is the only way we can repay it is to be out here showing your faces, like having signs showing support. You know everyone here is trying to stay as peaceful as we can and supportive and I don’t know, it’s just the right thing to do,” said a protestor.

Despite near-constant rain, the group marched from Nob Hill to the University of New Mexico and continued marching around the campus. It was mostly a peaceful night and protesters say they want these demonstrations to remain peaceful so their message can get across.
