ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. (KRQE) – One of the young men charged with the torture and murders of two Albuquerque teens took a last-minute plea deal in another case.
Jimmie Dunbar Atkins is one of four charged with killing 14 and 15-year-olds Collin Romero and Ahmed Lateef on the West Mesa after recording their torture on Snapchat. Monday, he was supposed to go on trial for robbing several people at a house party back in November with another suspect in the murders, Stephen Goldman.
Atkins pleaded guilty to armed robbery, conspiracy and aggravated assault. Prosecutors agreed to an 18-year sentence that would be served at the same time as the sentence for the murders if he’s convicted, meaning he would face no additional time.
KRQE News 13 reached out to District Attorney Raul Torrez’s office to find out why they offered this deal. The explanation form a spokesperson was Atkins was not armed during the robbery, only with those present at the time.
