A deadly disease is sweeping over the deer population and humans might be next.
A fatal neurological illness known as “chronic wasting disease” has infected deer and elk in 24 states, including New Mexico.
It’s been nicknamed “zombie deer disease” because of its symptoms, including drooling, lack of coordination and aggression. Infected deer are also less afraid of people.
Experts are concerned that the consumption of contaminated meat and water could spread the disease to humans. There are no treatments for the disease, as well as no known cases in humans yet.
