A new study shows that New Mexico public colleges and universities that offer teacher preparation programs received B’s and C’s in the first round of performance grades.

According to the Santa Fe New Mexican, 11 state schools offer these programs.

Six of them received B’s and the remaining five received C’s.

The prep classes are rated on four main things:

  • Their track record in recruiting diverse and prepared students.
  • Their record developing candidates who demonstrate competence.
  • The degree to which the program’s graduates secure jobs in New Mexico.
  • How graduates perform in the classroom, as based on the state teacher evaluation system.

The grading system was put in place 18 months ago under Governor Susana Martinez’s administration.

It remains unclear if the grading system will remain as is during Gov.-elect Michelle Lujan Grisham’s term.
