A heroic act was caught on camera as an Alamogordo police officer saved a choking baby.

A family was in the department’s parking lot Tuesday morning when a 5-month-old baby started choking on a piece of pizza.

Officer Kerry Jarrett says he was called outside, got the boy, ran him inside, and started giving him back blows until he started breathing again. He says it was his natural instinct to step in and help.

“When I saw what was happening, I just naturally knew what I needed to do,” Officer Jarrett said. “When you get done and the child is okay, and the family is okay, that’s when you get your adrenaline dump.”

Officer Jarrett has served 35 years with the department. He’ll be given a Lifesaving Award for his quick actions.
