House Bill 477 would allow seniors to claim up to $24,000 in social security income without being forced to pay state taxes.
Sponsors say the bill could save people on a fixed income hundreds of dollars each year.
Right now, New Mexico is one of only 13 states that taxes social security.
No word yet on when the bill will be heard.
