TAOS, N.M. (KRQE)- In response to fuel moistures and predicted weather, fire managers on the Camino Real Ranger District of the Carson National Forest anticipate to begin prescribed fire projects around June 28. These prescribed burns will continue as long as the weather permits.
The burns will take place off of Highway 64 at Palo Flechado Pass at Taos Pine and Bull Springs units. Taos Pines is 410 acres and is located next to the Taos Pines community and Forest Service Road 5. Bull Springs is 576 acres and is south of Highway 64 near the A1 spur of the Elliott Barker Trail.
As of Thursday, July 4, crews have completed the last 173-acres of the 546-acres Bull Springs Unit of the La Jara prescribed burn. Crews will continue to monitor the area and burning will resume on Friday, July 5.
The Palo Flechado Trail #1A is inaccessible from Palo Flechado Pass to Bull Springs Meadow due to the fire operations. Additionally, the Elliott Barker Trail #1 segment from Bull Springs Meadow to Apache Pass will also not be accessible.
Entry into those trail systems is highly discouraged by forest officials due to possible hazards resulting from the prescribed fire.
The La Jara prescribed burn in Taos Pine and Bull Springs are designed by fire officials to prevent the risk of high-severity wildfire and to promote forest health. Smoke in the area may be visible to those in Angel Fire, Taos Canyon, Eagle Nest, Valle Escondido, and Black Lake.
