HERCULANEUM, Mo. — It's the first thing you see when you drive into Herculaneum - this bridge that was built during the Great Depression.
After 84 years of carrying cars across Joachim Creek along State Route 61 in Jefferson County, the truss bridge has reached the end of it's road.
MoDOT is offering you a chance to save the bridge from the wrecking ball, but it comes with a catch.
You can become the new owner of the bridge, and move it or keep it right where it stands for no purchasing cost, but you will have to either maintain it or pay for it to be moved.
If you read more of the fine print on MoDOT's website, you'll find you might be able to get some of that money back.
It says there are multiple federal grants you can apply for to get up to 80 percent of what the state would otherwise spend demolishing the bridge.
But that's still a big commitment.
"It’s interesting, but it’s not something I’d want to do, own a bridge," says Sam Shelton, who lives within eyesight of the historic bridge.
"I think you better have a lot of money to try to keep up with the upkeep on it," says Kenneth Chailland, who lives next to Sam.
Both men, say they've seen the bridge flood too many times to be its new owner.
Joachim Creek isn't the only bridge up for grabs. On MoDOT's website, there are more than a dozen bridges, large and small, available for the taking.
