For the first time in 70 years, there will be no horse races in Fort Pierre.
Fort Pierre Race Track Manager Shane Kramme said the Verendrye Benovolent Association has decided not to host races in 2019 due to the lack of funding and several other considerations. Kramme said it was a difficult decision, but the VBA board believes it’s in the best interest of the organization, community, South Dakota horse people, and participating equine athletes.
Kramme said races for 2020 has yet to be determined.
Horse racing is held in two communities in the state, Ft. Pierre and Aberdeen. Last year, races were held four days in Ft. Pierre and another four days in Aberdeen. The status of racing in Aberdeen for this year hasn’t been determined yet.
