Independence, Kansas City customers wake up without power

UPDATE: August 8, 8:00 a.m. | Independence power reports only one outage affecting one customer. Evergy reports 37 outages affecting 1,266 customers.

EARLIER | More than 10,000 area Independence and Evergy customers woke up without power Saturday morning.

Independence Power and Light reported nine outages affecting more than 9,000 customers before 6 a.m.

Outages affected an area generally from Chrysler Avenue on the west to 291 Highway on the east side, and from 31st street on the north of 53rd Terrace on the south side.

Evergy in Kansas City reported 27 outages affecting more than 1,000 customers.

41 Action News meteorologist Jeff Penner said lightning from overnight storms that moved through the area might have been a contributing factor.

Crews are working to restore power to those affected.
