SALT LAKE CITY — Multiple road closures will affect traffic in the Salt Lake Valley Saturday as the University of Utah Salt Lake City Marathon takes place.

The marathon events begin at 6 a.m. with a bike tour, followed by the marathon and half marathon at 7 a.m., according to the event website. A 5K and 10K run, as well as a 10K skate race, will start between 7:10 and 7:30 a.m.

The marathon course starts on Wasatch Drive on the University of Utah campus and heads west through the Avenues, before going south through Memory Grove Park and back east along South Temple.

From there, it heads south along the east side of Salt Lake City, through Sugar House Park and ending up in downtown Holladay. The course then turns north, following Highland Drive and 600 East and finally ends at Library Square in downtown Salt Lake.

There will be a total of 56 road closures during the marathon events, according to the website. The first closure begins at midnight Friday, and the last street will open back up at 6 p.m. Saturday. Most of the closures will last a few hours.

Salt Lake police officers will allow vehicle traffic to cross the marathon routes at major intersections as race crowds allow, according to the race website. Traffic from the Avenues will be able to cross 11th Avenue at I Street.
