SALT LAKE CITY — Police identified a 41-year-old man who was found dead after police responded to a report of shots fired Monday morning.

Gerad Ohlwiler died from gunshot wounds in what is being investigated as a homicide. Officers found Ohlwiler's body lying in the street near 1000 West and Wenco Drive (about 1580 South) when they responded to the area about 4:30 a.m., police said.

Resident Lorena Mota told KSL TV the shooting happened across the street from her mother's home. She received a frantic phone call from her family Monday morning.

"They all woke up super scared," Mota said. "It's scary because it's not the first time it's happened. Last time, it happened right across (from) their house. It's like what if one of the bullets goes and hits their home? It's super scary."

Police spent the morning trying to piece together what happened. However, rain showers Monday created problems for investigators, said Salt Lake City police detective Jess Perea.

"We have to take our time and we have to be diligent and very thorough, especially with this weather here — the water washing whatever it may away," he said.

No suspect information or vehicle has been released. Officers knocked on neighborhood doors Monday morning trying to gather as much information as possible, Perea added.

Anyone who may have information about the shooting is encouraged to call Salt Lake police at 801-799-3000.
