SALT LAKE CITY — A man suffered a leg injury after an early-morning shooting in Rose Park, police said.

Police believe the man was shot in the leg near the intersection of 1000 North and Colorado Street about 12:45 a.m. Thursday, Salt Lake City Police Lt. Dave Cracroft said.

The man then ran away from the scene, police believe, and jumped a fence into the backyard of a home on Oakley Street, where they found him, Cracroft said.

The man was taken to the hospital with a serious, but not life-threatening, leg injury, Cracroft said.

A handful of people heard shots fired in the area, but police have had trouble locating any witnesses, Cracroft said. The victim was “evasive” with some of the questions police asked him, he added.

Police do not know what led to the shooting, but the man who was shot has a history of gang activity, Cracroft said.

A car that was parked on the street in the area had some bullet holes, but there was no other apparent damage from the shooting, Cracroft said.

No other information about the shooting was immediately available Thursday morning.
