MILLCREEK — Police arrested a man Sunday who they said assaulted a child riding a bike and shot at a child’s father, and then barricaded himself inside his home.
About 3:10 p.m., officers in Millcreek received a report about a man that had “confronted some juveniles that were riding their bikes in the area, and during that confrontation between the juveniles and the adult male, an assault occurred on one of the children,” said Unified Police Det. Kevin Mallory.
The incident occurred in the area of Doreen Street in Millcreek. Mallory did not have additional details about the alleged assault.
Seeing the fight between the man and children, one man believed to be a child’s parent came to intervene, Mallory said. The man who was arguing with the children pulled out a handgun and fired multiple rounds at the other man, and then ran into his own house, according to the detective.
A SWAT team arrived to negotiate with the man. Neighbors informed officers where the man lived.
“We had a lot of good help on our neighbors here, who were able to give us some good information,” Mallory said.
“At one point while we had officers setting up containment on the house, we did hear a single gunshot coming from inside the house, which further supported the belief he was inside.”
Several hours later, the SWAT team arrested the man without incident. His name was not immediately released, but Mallory said he appeared to be in his 50s. Police were interviewing him Sunday night.
Police later identified the man as Richard Lindem, 61.
He was arrested for investigation of felony child abuse, aggravated assault and discharge of a firearm, as well as misdemeanor reckless endangerment, Unified police said Monday morning in a tweet.
