LAKE POWELL — A 30-year-old man is presumed drowned in Lake Powell after going missing on Sunday, National Park Service officials said Monday.
The man was with a group of five friends on a private vessel in the Warm Creek arm of the lake, about 3,000 meters from the Cut.
The man, of Flagstaff, Arizona, went for a swim without a lifejacket in semi-windy conditions. He was last seen about 100 meters from the boat when he disappeared underwater and did not resurface.
National Park Service Rangers and Classic Air Medical searched for the man until dusk.
The man is now presumed dead and recovery operations are continuing, officials said. The park service deployed a submerged dive boat using side-scan sonar to look for the man’s body.
The Kane County Sheriff’s Office and park service are investigating the incident. The man’s name was not released, pending notification to family.
The park service advised individuals to always wear a life jacket when recreating in water and stay informed of changing weather conditions.
