Christmas wreaths were placed on the graves of veterans Saturday morning as a tribute to their sacrifice.

It’s part of an annual event called Wreaths Across America, and it took place at Calvary Cemetery.

The Mary Draper Chapter has been fundraising for the event all year and reached their goal of 700 wreaths for this year’s Christmas season.

And for its organizers, the event hits home.

“I have family members here that are buried,” said Deanna Girrenes. “One is a veteran and I just thought that if I do it for one we can do it for all of them.”

“My father was a veteran and he’s no longer here but I can remember him on this day,” added Deb Miller.

This is Wichita’s second year taking part in Wreaths Across America.
