Developers say construction for the downtown Topeka plaza is right where they want it to be.

This week, they are working on smoothing out the foundation for what will become Evergy Plaza. Officials told KSNT News this step is one of the most important in the building process.

“Any structure is only as good as the foundation that’s underneath it and we’ve had to do quite a bit of work in order to meet the geological requirements, and so things should start picking up probably after this week,” said Kurt Young from the Downtown Topeka Foundation.

By next week, crews will start on building retaining walls.Once construction is complete, the plaza will include a performance stage, a digital screen, fountains and even an ice rink in the winter.

Evergy Plaza is scheduled to open next March.
