Topeka Firefighters have battled five major fires in just four days.

Fire Marshal Michael Martin said he expects more fires as winter gets closer.

A gas generator and a furnace are what caused two of those fires.

Martin said the use of space heaters and other appliances is what usually causes accidental fires.

He also recommends making sure your furnace or any appliance you use to keep your house warm this season works properly.

“Check out those appliances,” said Martin. “We’re going to be using them a lot here. It’s going to be cold. So, make sure they’re in good shape. Use them the way they’re intended.”

General Manager of Menards Bruce Mezera said knowing how to use things like space heaters and generators properly is also very important.

“You’re going to want to make sure you check the obvious things,” said Mezera. “Is the plug good, the cord good, if it’s a clean unit. You don’t want to have any issues with debris or anything along those lines.”

Another thing you’ll want to watch out for as we get into the holiday season is they type of decorations you’re using.

Try to avoid using candles, and if you have a live Christmas tree in your house, make sure you water it daily.

The Topeka Fire Department said it’s especially important to keep these things in mind as the next three months are when the most fires happen.

Martin said regardless of the season, you should always have an escape plan.

“We need to always anytime of the year, plan and practice our home fire escape plans. Make sure there’s two ways out.” said Martin.
