The Topeka Police Department wants more cameras in local homes to catch criminals in the act, so they’re giving away some of their own.

The camera giveaway was announced Nov. 1, but in the wake of a three-man burglary caught on camera in the capital city, TPD Lieutenant Andrew Beightel wanted to remind Topekans that the cameras make a difference in curbing crime. He said the video of the burglary will help identify the suspects.

“It basically shows the crime in the act and shows the suspects, the perpetrators right there even though they have their hoods up, you can still clearly see their faces,” Beightel said.

So far, the TPD have hosted two giveaways on their Facebook page in November, once a week on Sundays. The page asks participants to write a clever response to a question, such as best excuse for getting out of a ticket. The TPD then chooses the best answer.
