LAS VEGAS (KTNV) — Boulder Highway is getting a makeover, according to Southern Nevada transportation leaders.

The upgrades are expected to include improved pedestrian, transit, cycling and roadway segments.

Within a half-mile radius of Boulder Highway there are nearly 20,000 homes, apartments and condominiums as well as more than 970 commercial lots.

The area also sees 10,000 RTC transit riders and 36,000 vehicles traveling daily.

"Its (Boulder) purpose and use have changed quite a bit," said Craig Raborn, director of planning for the Regional Transportation Commission of Southern Nevada.

Transportation leaders also believe Boulder Highway is in need of a makeover since crashes and collisions continue to be a problem.

The most recent incident occurred Monday night where a 78-year-old woman lost her life crossing the street.

"We want to improve conditions for walking and bicycling. Improve travel safety and support the use of transit along the corridor," Raborn said.

Pedestrians told 13 Action News it is dangerous to walk on the 15-mile stretch of highway.

A recent study revealed that the roadway has become one of the valley’s busiest and ranks among the highest in pedestrian fatalities statewide.

Nevada Department of Transportation, City of Henderson, Clark County and the City of Las Vegas were asking residents to weigh in on proposed transportation and pedestrian improvements to the area.

Further details on the project are available here with improvements expected to start once feedback is collected from residents and business owners.
