Snow and wind forecast for the Anchorage area could hamper assessment efforts after Friday’s earthquake and create some new hazards.

Anchorage Fire Department Chief Jodi Hettrick said that 45 mph winds are forecast to start midday Saturday, with 65 mph winds forecast on the Hillside. After the earthquake and aftershocks, Hettrick said officials expect a lot of loose material and loose trees and tree limbs that could exacerbate damage.

“Keep an eye on things before the wind event happens, if you can get out and batten down the hatches, that would be a really good idea,” said Hettrick.

, although blizzard conditions are not predicted.

“There’s an urgency for us to do the assessment before we are buried under snow, so we can have a better idea of what needs fixing,” said Mayor Ethan Berkowitz. “There’s a premium on acting now.”

With the wind, snowfall and potential for slippery roads, officials are advising everyone to stay indoors if possible.

“Stay home and stream Netflix,” said Hettrick. “Get caught up on all the Christmas shows. That would be a great thing to do this weekend.”
