Cars, liquor bottles and more shoes than you can count--Anchorage faces a filthy spring

Along almost any trail in Anchorage is trash. Like, a lot of it.

At Chester Creek trail there are tiny houses built by homeless people. Outside those dwellings made of plastic tarps and grocery carts there are propane tanks, baby swings, liquor bottles, yoga mats and more shoes than you can count.

There's also a lot of poop.

Beside the ballfields at the Sullivan Arena is a black car with its windows smashed out and all four tires slashed.

On Dowling Rd. there's a white SUV emerging from a massive snow pile.

"I think it's funny how it got buried under the snow," Tua Maafala from Anchorage said while on his lunch break.

April 27 is the official Anchorage Chamber Citywide Cleanup. But an earlier spring this year means people in Anchorage are surrounded by a lot of trash now. The Chamber says that last year during the big cleanup 730 tons of litter were picked up.

"Empty soda cans, candy bags, and what not," Joyce Reed-Watt who lives on Government Hill, said. "McDonald's bags and all that stuff. It's just enormous, whenever you pick up trash it's just kind of like, 'Whoa.'"

A man in Town Square Park in downtown Anchorage who calls himself Kenny-G was wearing a hubcap as a necklace pendant.

"Saved some money and got real creative with it," he said.

City crews started sweeping Town Square Park as a cloud of dust burst around them.

"We're going to have a spring cleaning," Cathy Boney said walking past the park.

While the official city cleanup is still weeks away, it's not too early to start now.
