A man was shot once in the upper body when police say an "altercation" escalated into violence outside of an Anchorage motel.

At around 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 28, gunfire rang out in the area of the Econo Inn at 642 E 5th Avenue. Police arrived on the scene and found a man with a gunshot wound to the upper body, according to an alert issued by APD.

The shooting transpired after a group of people standing outside of the Econo Inn got into an argument, and "someone in the group fired a shot," APD said.

The victim's wound was called non-life-threatening by police, and right now, no arrests have been made.

APD said the motive and circumstances of the shooting are still under investigation, but that the shooting is thought to be "a targeted event," and not a random shooting.

This story will be updated with further developments in this shooting case.
