LIST: Alaska businesses offering discounts, other assistance during government shutdown
The government shutdown is affecting the lives of thousands across the country, and right here in Alaska. Some employees are furloughed or working without pay, and others are off the job entirely until the shutdown ends.
To help curb the impact this is having on the lives of Alaskans, local businesses and agencies are providing goods and services free of charge or discounted to federal employees, or allowing deferred payments or payment plans. This article will serve as a list of those limited offers.
GCI customers can set up payment plans for the duration of the shutdown. GCI customers who want to set up a payment plan to defer payments can visit their local GCI store or call customer service at 907-265-5400 or 800-800-4800.
From now through the duration of the government shutdown, any federal government employee can ride the People Mover bus for free.

KBC decided to offer all out-of-work federal employees free Red Goat brew of any size, with refills all day until the furlough is over.
The offer is good at any Kaladi cafe during the furlough with a valid federal worker ID to receive free Red Goat brewed coffee.
Until the shutdown situation is resolved, DRC will be giving away a free half pound bag of coffee to any furloughed federal employee when they make an online purchase.

The Baby Store Alaska is offering 50 percent off any gently used maternity, baby and children's clothing and goods, 30 percent off bath and baby care products, 30 percent off cloth diapering products. An LES is the documentation needed, the store says, noting that part of the partnership that owns it is a federal employee family working without pay during the shutdown.
This Wasilla book store says it's offering a buy-one book get-one book discount to government employees who have been furloughed.
This BIg Lake-area eatery is offering a drink and chips on the house to government employees out of work or working without pay. "If you're hungry, but can't afford to pay right now, we'll take your IOU since you have to, also," the business wrote on Facebook. The grill is open Monday-Thursday 11 a.m. - 5 p.m. at Mile 52 Parks Highway.
